It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote “the years teach much that the days never knew”. This definitely applies to one’s personal year. In Numerology, the personal year is a guidepost to the soil you will grow in during that particular year. It can be a year of planting (a number one personal year), a year of patience (the number two personal year), a year of harvesting (a number eight personal year) and a year of endings (a nine personal year). Once we know and understand our own personal year, we can work with the energy of that year. Without this knowledge, we may work against our own best interests by planting in an ending year or resting during a harvest year. We, then, wonder why things didn’t work out the way we planned.
Emerson was right, if we reflect and assess our lives over the years past, we see our mistakes in choices and the disappointments as a result. We also see why things happened in a particular year and begin to accept the rhythm of our own lives. Many of us are beginning to see that there is a pattern to a life. The same condition keeps showing up. The willfulness in our poor choices provides discouragement in our own decision-making. Self doubt and a lack of trust brings on the characteristics of indecision. Since the universe loves a made-up mind, it is important to make decisions so it can help you. If your timing is off, the decision can go in a wrong direction. It takes us back to the understanding of your timing and the energy you are working with. When we try to push the river during the rest and restore period of the personal year number 7, we usually end up exhausted and sometimes ill by the end of the year.
In my own personal life, I work according to my personal year. As I have lived many decades, I see the foolishness of trying to go against my own programming. It has helped me to know in advance what I will be working with. Since I am born reasonably early in the year, February, I can feel the energy begin to shift in the prior months before it arrives. November and December are transits months for me, leaving the eight personal year and preparing for the upcoming number nine year. This brings me to today as I now am in a nine personal year. I knew there would be many endings ahead in 2026 and right on cue, there are. January began with the death of my brother-in-law (a cancer patient). February brought me the death of my sister, his wife. This was not expected but then not surprising. They had been married forever and I don’t think she could have had much quality of life without him. April saw the death of my wonderful daughter-in-law, Cari (this was from blood cancer). Though very ill, she always rallied from her hospitalizations. We were all heartbroken. In my nine year, I am only in May and have already had many endings. More will be coming as past history has taught me.
Several years ago in another nine year, my mother died in the 9th month of September, on the 9th day, in the 9th hour 9:14 on the death certificate. Many, many years ago, unbeknownst to me, I filed for divorce in another 9 personal year. For those who hold little value in knowing our personal years, we do ourselves a disfavor by our ignorance. I also remember many years ago when I scheduled all sorts of public appearances during a rest and restore number 7 personal year, one of the programs was scheduled incorrectly and nobody showed and when it came time to lead a retreat, I got a wonderful replacement as I was too exhausted to do it. Instead, I stayed home the entire weekend in my pajamas and only got dressed on Monday. Seven personal years are great for planning and assessing but not for productivity.
Now many people ask when does a personal year begin. It begins in January but gets stronger as the year progresses. If you happen to be born late in the year from October on, you must learn to stagger the prior year and the new year. In short, you are still under the old energy as you progress into the new. This confuses people once they begin a year in January. Overall, January and February are quiet months and remnants of the prior year. We are still hung over from the previous year. The month of March is the month to really get moving out. It is the 3rd month and the month of ready, get set, go. Three bases in baseball, three strikes you are out, three’s a crowd etc. We know that the 3rd expands out.
By knowing your personal year, you can prevent much heartache in your life. It doesn’t mean you can prevent it or even try. It does mean things have changed. The energy you were working with last year will not arrive for another nine years. Understanding this can impress upon your consciousness to know when hold, when to fold and when to walk away. Once you understand this, you might hold in a four personal year and walk away in a nine personal year. Incidentally, the number 9 year is one of the most telling ending years. This includes job losses, changes, death, endings, divorce etc. It is NOT the time to begin a new business endeavor, buy a new car, house. It is a time to finish up projects, complete the book, pack up and let go.
